The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;
his mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.
- Lamentations 3:22-23
God’s mercy and love never stop. He is faithful to His people. He can do anything to get our attention. Sometimes, He opens doors for people to step through to see or receive His love and saving grace. For Skylar McCaig, it was an invitation from a friend to move to Texas. Skylar had been praying for a sign, a door out of the tumultuous and rocky life he had been living and a path toward something new. He was looking for a sign that would lead him into a new day, where he could experience new mercies and hope.
After a tumultuous business deal, Skylar knew he had had enough. Enough of living impulsively. Enough of living for himself. He was ready to walk through a different door than the ones he had been choosing in life.
“I was reckless and selfish and drinking and lived in fear of missing out,” Skylar described himself. “I thought it was all on me. The reason for my success is from me. I prayed to God when I needed it. I didn’t understand the full picture. It was my buddy who said we should come to Austin. I started praying if Austin was the answer. I was looking for a sign. I remember saying “Okay God, give us a sign.” And He did it over and over.”
It was in Austin that Skylar and his wife, Danyelle, and son, Cash, got connected to a church. There they met friends who came alongside their family and pointed them to Jesus. Through that gospel-preaching church and godly community, a genuine desire to seek and know God grew. Skylar shared “I started to understand God’s Word. I started to understand through the preaching what worship really was, and what it meant to be in community. I slowly understood that following Jesus was more than attending church on Sunday.”
Skylar was learning that following Jesus was also serving others, inviting friends in, and learning what it meant to live as a disciple who makes disciples.
“It was a big God, little me perspective,” he reflected. “We’re supposed to be disciples for Him. I understood for the first time that God loves me no matter what I have done or continue to do. He is abundantly laying out blessing for me and my family. The move to Austin was a big part of that. I am so grateful for His love and blessing. My wife has always been so strong in her faith and I knew then I wasn’t.”
Skylar gave his life to Jesus in Austin. He knew everything came from Him. He saw and experienced God’s healing with his anxieties and worries. He understood that God is the answer for everything. He understood with no question that God is there during trouble and the reason for our joys. Skylar said “The light bulb went on. I was ignorant to so much, and now I understand a little more.”
The McCaig’s continued to grow in their faith during their two years in Austin. One thing they missed was their friends and family in Omaha. Last year, Skylar was offered a remote position with his work and he jumped at it. After trying out several churches in Omaha, looking for that gospel-preaching, Jesus-loving church family, they found Citylight. It was at Citylight where God offered another door to walk through.
“In March this year I was let go from my job,” Skylar confessed. “It was that layoff that allowed me to volunteer in May with Vacation Bible School. I got to be with my son Cash. I saw even more Jesus taking care of me, saving me and loving me. I’ve always wanted to get baptized, to publicly show this. Baptism is showing something that has already happened. And it has in me! So, I signed up for the June baptism and got baptized. I had fifteen people come. They were friends that normally wouldn’t come to church.”

Skylar described what life is like now that he has confessed Jesus has his Lord:
“It is overwhelming what God has done for me, and I am grateful for the blessings God has given me. Every day I look at the sunrise and know I have a place to lay my head. That I have life. Life that is abundant and I am grateful for God’s love. His abundant love and grace and I can’t be thankful enough for Him. That is overwhelming. I encourage others to get into church, into the Bible and to baptism. Build your relationship with God. Get in a community because it will change your life and for the better. There is no substitute.”
Looking back, Skylar could see how God was using ordinary people and ordinary moments to get his attention or as he would describe “To shake me so that I get in His word. To show me God is everything and that you have nothing without Him. And to stop sinning.” What started as a prayer for a way out became the beginning of a new life, one where God continues to open doors and give new mercy, steadfast love and faithfulness every single day. Great is your faithfulness oh Lord!
