Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Citylight considering a transition from C&MA to SBC?

We believe God has called our local church to multiply disciples, churches, and church planting movements. We are asking Jesus to catalyze these moments in 10 additional Midwest communities. With this big vision comes big questions. We believe God has providentially opened relationships and opportunities with the SEND Network, the church planting arm of the SBC, to help answer some the questions of HOW.

Hasn't the C&MA assisted Citylight church plants in the past? Why change now?

For sure! To be clear, we LOVE the C&MA and have treasured their friendship and partnership! There are 8 Citylight churches that will be staying in the C&MA, with several more Citylight granddaughter churches being planting in the C&MA this year. We celebrate that! The local C&MA leadership has been incredibly gracious and understanding as we’ve communicated our exploration of this new potential partnership.

The C&MA is radically focused on global missions and has been a catalyst for bringing Jesus to the nations. This is a beautiful and Biblical focus! While we seek to engage the nations, we are also aware that the reach of the Church in our own country has largely plateaued and in many places is declining. The Lord has given us a deep burden and sense of urgency to spur on a gospel-resurgence right here in our own region!

As we look to pursue the vision of a multiplicative movement of gospel-centered churches domestically, we have found that the Send Network has a like-minded focus and incredibly helpful equipping tools to help with that vision. We believe they provide a supportive infrastructure for planting that will help strengthen and accelerate the mission God has called us to.

Why not keep an affiliation with both C&MA and SBC?

Both the C&MA and SBC are kingdom-minded and recognize we are running after the same thing - Jesus! Through our discussions, we have seen a beautiful picture of the people of God being pulled together for his purpose. The C&MA and SBC would both allow Citylight to maintain a level of affiliation with both groups while also cautioning us regarding the complexities that might create. With prayer and consideration, our elders have decided, although allowed, the additional complexities of dual-affiliation would be unwise in the long run.

What level of control will the SBC denomination have over Citylight Church?

All SBC churches are self-governed which helps ensure we can maintain our particular Citylight culture and ministry practices. Any denominational leadership in the SBC is subordinate to the local church. They exist to support local churches from below, not lead local churches from above.

In short, nothing about Citylight culture would change. We will only and always fly the flag of King Jesus above Citylight Church. We are about Christ and His Kingdom. Any partnerships and affiliations will have will be subordinate to and supportive of that allegiance!

What is the SBC position on things like alcohol, cards, and dancing?

Historically, some SBC churches have held extra-biblical views on these activities. The SBC faith and message does not contain a position on alcohol, playing cards or dancing. The SBC does hold scripture as the inspired and inerrant word of God and Scripture is clear on its teachings against drunkenness. To be clear - Citylight's position and teaching on these things will not change. We will continue to champion fidelity to Scripture, freedom in Christ, and godly wisdom in all things.

Haven't SBC churches had a history of sexism, racism, and sexual abuse?

We grieve the impacts of sin in our world and recognize the church at large, and the SBC in particular, has not been immune. The SBC has intentionally pursued a posture of repentance and reconciliation where they have fallen short in these areas in the past. In 1995, the SBC adopted a resolution on racial reconciliation and since then has been purposefully pursuing becoming a Biblical, multi-cultural, multi-ethnic denomination.

Regardless of which denomination Citylight is part of, we are committed to the protection of all people and do not tolerate discrimination or abuse based on race or gender of any kind. We are committed to upholding incredibly high standards to ensure the safety of children and all vulnerable people that are in our care and a part of our fellowship. Our policies to protect against and report any issues will remain the same.

Where can I review the beliefs of the C&MA and SBC?

Citylight Elders and Pastors have closely reviewed the statement of faith from both the C&MA and SBC and are in agreement with both. You can review both organizations below:

What changes at Citylight?

Citylight’s vision, values, beliefs, practices, and culture are deeply rooted in our local church community and leadership. They don’t come from a denomination. The mission of Citylight to multiply disciples and churches will not change. The gospel-centered culture of joy and hope we have in Jesus will continue to be the visible piece of who we are. The Sunday morning gathering and weekly scattering rhythms of city groups will continue, unchanged culturally and experientially.

Would Citylight need to adopt new by-laws to change denominations?

Yes, a member vote will be required to modify our by-laws and affiliation with the C&MA.

Will the Citylight members have a ballot vote on a change from C&MA to SBC?

Yes, at the end of our due diligence period a paper ballot vote will occur for members of Citylight Church.

How do I know if I am a member of Citylight?

You have participated in a membership class and have been affirmed and commissioned by a Citylight pastor or elder.
