Citylight Church was planted in the fall of 2012 with a small team of people devoted to prayer who had a desire to see Omaha transformed by the gospel. The very first gathering included 8 people praying for the city of Omaha in a small living room. After a few months a few dozen more were added to their number and they moved their prayer gathering to a bigger home.
In September of 2012, a core team of around 100 people rallied behind the vision to see a church planted that would bring the light of the gospel to every neighborhood and network of people in Omaha. Because of their growth, they began looking for a larger space to meet in. This led them to a 106-year old church building near 40th and Cumming with stained glass windows, a pipe organ, crumbling plaster, mold in the basement, and one toilet. Over a short period of time this $500,000 building became available for $100,000. Though still too expensive for a small-sized core team, God generously came through and the C&MA denomination, dedicated to church planting, purchased the building in full!
Over the next few months, 8 City Groups were launched – mostly in the mid-town area. At the same time, hundreds of volunteers poured thousands of hours of work into renovating the old church building. On February 3, 2013, Citylight Church launched its first official public service with over 500 people in attendance. In the summer of 2013 they hosted their very first baptism celebration. 40 people (including people from the neighborhood) were baptized across the street on the lawn!
After moving to three services and experiencing additional fast-paced growth, the church moved its Sunday gathering to the newly renovated Omar building three blocks west. Today, there are over 1,000 adults and kids that worship there each Sunday. In addition, these people scatter throughout the week into 26 different City Groups that meet throughout the week all over the city to pray, study the Bible, build close relationships, and serve on mission.
Since Citylight launched less than two years ago, 150 people have been baptized! Citylight is and will always be committed to multiplying disciples and churches locally and globally. We want to be a catalyst for launching gospel-centered churches everywhere – with the presence of God and for the glory of God.
